DeepSeek vs ChatGPT: Comparing the Most Popular AI Chatbots in 2025

DeepSeek has stirred the waters in the tech industry with its no-cost model, posing a challenge to OpenAI—the company that created ChatGPT.

I’ve decided to get involved in this controversial battle between two chatbots—DeepSeek vs ChatGPT—and share my honest opinion.

What follows next is quite a dynamic comparison. Keep reading to see how these AI giants compare.

ChatGPT vs DeepSeek [Key Takeaways]

  • DeepSeek excels in problem-solving and coding, while ChatGPT thrives in creative writing and multitasking.
  • DeepSeek is free of charge. This positions it as an economical choice for technological undertakings. ChatGPT has a free version but requires payment for premium functions.
  • DeepSeek relies on basic chips for efficient learning, whereas ChatGPT utilizes advanced GPUs and neural networks for more complex interactions.
  • DeepSeek runs offline across devices but may face sign-up or cyber issues due to high demand. ChatGPT, though partially paid, offers various tools and API integrations.
  • Open-source access lets users tailor DeepSeek to their needs, ensuring data privacy (if tasks run offline and users don’t fetch online data).

What Is DeepSeek?

DeepSeek

DeepSeek is a Chinese AI company, headquartered in Hangzhou. It was established in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng, who is also the CEO.

DeepSeek develops open-source large language models (LLMs), with its DeepSeek-R1 model offering performance similar to other LLMs like OpenAI’s GPT-4 and o1 models.

Despite its comparable capabilities, DeepSeek-R1 was trained at a significantly lower cost of $6 million, requiring just a tenth of the computing power of models like GPT-4.

What Is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT

ChatGPT is an AI language model developed by OpenAI, designed to generate human-like text responses across a variety of applications. Launched in 2022, it is built on the GPT-3 and GPT-4 architectures.

It is known for its versatility in tasks such as creative writing, problem-solving, and casual conversation. It has gained widespread global use for both personal and business purposes. While it offers a free version, users can access additional features and improved performance via paid subscriptions.

DeepSeek AI vs ChatGPT: A Detailed Comparison

DeepSeek vs ChatGPT: What’s the big deal?

Well, let me break it down in simple words. DeepSeek and ChatGPT are both smart computer programs, but each one excels in different ways.

DeepSeek solves tricky puzzles and answers complex questions with blazing speed. ChatGPT is like a jack-of-all-trades—it’s great at chit-chat and coming up with creative stories.

I’m ready to share some interesting details. So, let’s dive into the key components of ChatGPT and DeepSeek.

Architecture

DeepSeek opts for simple, yet intelligent, chips to acquire knowledge. So it doesn’t require high-end computers to answer queries.

In contrast, ChatGPT uses advanced neural networks on high-performance GPUs for more complex interactions.

Speed of responses

The first thing I noticed when I started using DeepSeek was the high speed of its answers. It was so quick that it was hard for me to keep up. I had to ask it to slow down a bit. ChatGPT is slower at generating outputs and, thus, much easier to follow.

Design

DeepSeek’s interface is similar to ChatGPT’s. That’s not a bad thing at all. However, I was curious why DeepSeek resembles ChatGPT to such an extent and asked the chatbot this question:

ā€œWhy is DeepSeek’s interface similar to ChatGPT’s?ā€

Here’s what DeepSeek replied:

DeepSeek interface question

Conversation memory and web search capabilities

Both ChatGPT and DeepSeek store your previous conversations and have a web search feature.

DeepSeek can retrieve information from the web instantly when you’re online when the ā€œSearchā€ button is on.

DeepSeek search button

However, it took me several attempts to retrieve information from the internet. The AI tool kept telling me the server was busy or the search service was temporarily unavailable.

DeepSeek unavailable search

It’s not a surprise since everybody has wanted to try it out ever since it was launched on the market.

ChatGPT is also capable of browsing online. This feature is automatically activated when you request up-to-date information or provide links. You can also click the ā€œSearchā€ button.

ChatGPT search online

However, you have only several attempts before it asks you to upgrade to a paid version.

A word of caution: always be careful before confiding in any AI; both DeepSeek and its counterpart recommend that users avoid revealing excessive personal information.

Cost

DeepSeek permits usage entirely free of charge because it’s open-source. You have the freedom to download the model for offline interactions without incurring any charges. However, DeepSeek is currently only a text-based model that works with written AI prompts. It can’t create images, and you can’t use your voice to give commands.

As for ChatGPT, it can also be used at no cost, but this comes with some limitations. In my opinion, the free version is good enough and has evolved a lot since 2022.

But what if you want to get more varied outcomes, browse online excessively, or generate lots of images? In that case, ChatGPT needs a monthly payment of $20 for the fundamental facilities and escalates to $200 for advanced attributes.

Which one is cheaper for developers: DeepSeek or ChatGPT?

According to Statista, DeepSeek-R1 offers significantly lower token costs compared to OpenAI’s ChatGPT-o1 Mini.

Uploading one million tokens into DeepSeek-R1 costs just $0.55, while downloading costs $2.19. However, ChatGPT-o1 Mini, a scaled-down version of OpenAI’s latest o1 model, has similar context capabilities (124,000 tokens) but a higher output capacity (65,500 tokens vs DeepSeek’s 32,000). This equates to around $3 for uploading and $12 for downloading one million tokens.

The verdict is clear: DeepSeek is a more budget-friendly option for developers needing cost-effective AI solutions.

Accessibility

DeepSeek has established its prominence by being readily available on Android, Apple devices, and personal computers through its online platform. ChatGPT doesn’t step back in this regard as well.

Nevertheless, DeepSeek’s popularity has spiked to such an extent that new users occasionally face issues signing up or have to deal with disruptions due to cyber mischief. Similarly, ChatGPT users may experience slowdowns or restricted access during peak times, especially on the free tier.

What’s more, Perplexity has integrated the DeepSeek R1 model, ensuring fast responses with no censorship. Pro users get 500 searches daily, while others enjoy 5 free uses per day.

When it comes to the GPT model—the ā€œbrainā€ behind ChatGPT—it is available on Perplexity’s Pro plans, giving users access to GPT-4 Turbo for more advanced and comprehensive responses. The OpenAI o3-mini reasoning model is now available in the free version.

DeepSeek’s Strengths

DeepSeek is making waves in the AI world. It’s mostly because it shows us a cheaper way computers can help us with difficult tasks. DeepSeek’s open-source design also allows users to easily access, customize, and enhance it as needed.

I cover all its strengths in more detail below.

Excellence in logical reasoning

DeepSeek can think through problems step by step to reach the right answers. This AI even gives faster and more correct replies than other AI chatbots, especially with tough tasks like coding and math equations.

Imagine it drawing a map for you to understand how it got the answer—that’s what DeepSeek does with its clear explanations and visuals.

Now, why does this matter? In games or when making an app, you want your AI to figure things out quickly and accurately. That’s where DeepSeek shines because of its top-notch logical reasoning skills. It can tweak its intelligence to precisely fit what you need, making it a real winner for anyone into tech or gaming.

I pretended to be a developer who wanted to make a simple tic-tac-toe game and needed help with coding.

My prompt was:

ā€œI want to make a simple tic-tac-toe game for a mobile phone. Can you help me with coding?ā€

Before hitting the arrow, I made sure to click on the DeepThink (R1) button. The R1 model uses a chain of thought prompting. This means it encourages the model to explain its reasoning process, like thinking out loud. For example, when solving complex problems, DeepSeek R1 will show you each step it takes to arrive at the answer.

What amazed me was that DeepSeek indeed shared its reflections and logic before providing the code.

Benefits of open-source access

Open-source availability is a transformative factor, particularly with AI models like DeepSeek. This means that anyone can download and run the model on their personal computer.

Why is this important? It aids in maintaining data privacy.

I can run operations directly from home rather than transmitting information to a distant server. This poses a challenge to large US-based AI companies because users get a powerful tool at no expense.

The fact that DeepSeek is available at no cost also brings another advantage—financial savings. Whether you’re engaged in a project or casually playing around with AI, the absence of any fees reduces the entry hurdle for anyone interested in exploring the tech field.

Moreover, refining the technology becomes more straightforward since everyone can observe the inner workings and share their learnings. This open-source mentality may inspire us to collectively progress in our understanding and development of superior AI technologies.

ChatGPT’s Strengths

ChatGPT shines in two major areas: creative writing and its ability to work across various tasks. It’s not just about providing answers; it’s also great at understanding and responding to various topics, making our interactions with AI chatbots much more interesting.

Mastery in creative writing

I love telling stories. And guess what? So does ChatGPT. Its talent in creative writing stands out. Whether crafting a short story or dreaming up a fantasy world, this AI has the skills.

You can use ChatGPT to produce various types of AI-generated content, including blog posts, emails, or even jokes. It mixes words in ways that can touch your heart or make you laugh. Have you ever asked it to write a poem? You should. The results might surprise you.

I used the prompt:

ā€œPlease write a short poem about link building! Thank you!ā€

This is ChatGPT’s output:

chatgpt poem

Let’s test DeepSeek with the same request:

deepseek poem

The DeepSeek’s poem sounds good and has one more stanza than ChatGPT’s. However, I prefer ChatGPT’s version.

Here’s my comparison of ChatGPT and Gemini. It looks like ChatGPT still leads the way when it comes to creative writing.

Versatility across multiple applications

ChatGPT truly excels due to its adaptive capabilities. It parallels having a specialist at hand, irrespective of the subject matter. This software is not limited to a single use; it spans a wide array of applications.

ChatGPT can also switch roles easily—today, it’s an author; tomorrow, an advice columnist for your life questions; maybe even moonlighting as a scriptwriter for your next video project on the side. This versatility means I never run out of new and exciting outputs to explore with ChatGPT across different projects I work on.

Moreover, ChatGPT can explain tricky matters like math or history, almost like a tutor. Plus, it’s incredible for customer support, handling questions on the fly, and helping you brainstorm ideas.

Another area where ChatGPT excels is in generating images and diagrams. DeepSeek can’t create any of that yet.

Let me quickly demonstrate this. I provided it with a table detailing the number of SEO experts on LinkedIn by country. This data comes from one of my latest research projects.

Here’s my prompt, followed by pasting the table into the input field:

ā€œPlease create a pie chart to represent the information from this tableā€

This is the outcome:

How does ChatGPT enhance my daily routine?

What makes an app or tool a permanent fixture on your mobile device, tablet, or computer?
For me, it boils down to its practical applications in my day-to-day life. This is where ChatGPT shines.

Whether I am engaged in creative writing or need to understand the newest tech waves, ChatGPT has ready solutions. I love how it effortlessly summarizes large amounts of information, breaking it down into bite-sized chunks—whether in tables or detailed explanations—making it easy to grasp the essence.

As an SEO expert, I can’t stress enough how you can use ChatGPT for search engine optimization. It helps me create article outlines, key takeaways, catchy headlines, engaging meta titles and descriptions, and occasionally refine my business emails.

Additionally, the Advanced Voice Mode mimics a conversation with someone who precisely comprehends my requirements.

Its compatibility with APIs implies that businesses and developers can utilize ChatGPT in their respective tools. Such versatility isn’t merely intriguing—it’s highly resourceful for various purposes.

DeepSeek vs ChatGPT: Expert Opinions

To help navigate this dilemma, I’ve gathered expert insights on how DeepSeek and ChatGPT compare, and how these AI companions assist in their work.

Usability and best use cases

ā€œIn terms of usability, ChatGPT feels more intuitive for quick tasks, while DeepSeek requires a bit more setup but delivers deeper, more actionable insights.
For example, we used DeepSeek to identify a seasonal spike in demand for outdoor lighting, which allowed us to adjust our stock levels and marketing focus ahead of time. ChatGPT, meanwhile, helped us craft a holiday campaign that resonated with our audience.

If I had to choose, I’d say ChatGPT is better for creative tasks, while DeepSeek is superior for data-driven decisions. Both have their place, depending on your needs.ā€
— Matt Little, Founder and Managing Director, Festoon House

Selecting the right tool for development and data analysis

ā€œI used ChatGPT to create a chatbot for a client’s website, reducing customer support costs by 30%. If you focus on data analysis, predictive modeling, or extracting insights from large datasets, DeepSeek is more suitable. In one case, DeepSeek helped me identify inefficiencies in a web application’s user flow, leading to a 25% increase in conversions.
DeepSeek’s API requires more setup and expertise in data handling. ChatGPT is also easier for developers with limited AI experience, while DeepSeek requires a stronger background in data science and machine learning.
As a web developer, I find ChatGPT more versatile for day-to-day tasks, while DeepSeek is indispensable for data-intensive projects. If you’re working on a project involving conversational AI and data analysis, combining the strengths of both tools could yield the best results.ā€
— Burak Ɩzdemir, Web Developer and Founder, Morse Code Translator

Sustainability, efficiency, and environmental impact

ā€œThe massive GPU usage to train ChatGPT means a lot of electricity is burned, and even though we know Microsoft is aiming to be carbon-negative by 2030, the reality is that their data centers still rely a lot on non-renewable energy. This is a big downside for anyone conscious of energy consumption.
Now, DeepSeek, on the other hand, uses a different approach. It’s more focused on efficiency. They use things like pruning, distillation, and algorithmic streamlining to reduce the model size so it doesn’t require as much energy. It’s more optimized for efficiency, and if you’re looking to use AI with less of an environmental footprint, it’s a better choice in that respect.
But DeepSeek isn’t as widely known or as polished as ChatGPT. Also, it relies largely on Alibaba Cloud, which faces challenges of its own due to China’s coal-heavy energy grid. So, the environmental credentials there could still be in question unless DeepSeek is using green energy sources in the right regions.
That said, ChatGPT has a major edge when it comes to offering well-rounded, reliable AI services for a wide range of uses. It’s also backed by Microsoft’s strong reputation and known resources, so it might be the better choice if you need consistent support and top-notch features.ā€
— Kevin Baragona, Founder, Deep AI

DeepSeek’s edge: Data-driven insights for smarter marketing

ā€œOne unexpected benefit of DeepSeek is its ability to identify microtrends that would otherwise go unnoticed. Recently, it discovered a 12% increase in searches for dream analysis services in response to a popular Netflix show on lucid dreaming. This insight enabled us to launch a customized campaign for our dream interpretation advisors, which resulted in a 22% increase in bookings in just two weeks. ChatGPT simply doesn’t have the same capability to process and synthesize real-time data at this level.
Another under-the-radar feature is DeepSeek’s ability to track competitor activity on a granular scale. It detected an unexpected increase in a competitor’s ad spend during a typically slow season, allowing us to change our PPC strategy in advance. This saved us 18% in ad spend while still improving our ROI.
DeepSeek’s precision with data-driven decisions far outweighs ChatGPT’s creativity when it comes to managing large-scale marketing campaigns. Both tools have their place, but if I had to pick one, I’d go with DeepSeek to help us meet our financial goals.ā€
— Maryanne Fiedler, Director of Marketing, Psychic Source

ChatGPT in customer interactions: Training and innovation

ā€œWe use ChatGPT to create personalized responses to common customer issues, reducing our average email response time by 35%. As an example, during a recent product update, it assisted us in creating pre-written responses to frequently asked user questions, saving agents hours of work. It has a natural conversational tone, but it occasionally requires manual editing for technical precision.
ChatGPT also assists us in training our support team by generating realistic customer scenarios to practice. This improved new agent onboarding time by 25%. DeepSeek, while useful for data collection, lacks the ability to simulate interactions or guide employees.
When creating new workflows, ChatGPT makes innovative suggestions for automating repetitive tasks and increasing agent efficiency. It recently proposed a dynamic ticket routing strategy, which we implemented, reducing the ticket backlog by 22%. DeepSeek’s strengths in research don’t extend to creative ideation.ā€
— Stanislav Khilobochenko, Vice President of Customer Services, Clario

Conclusion

So, what have we learned about DeepSeek and ChatGPT? Both have their strong points.

DeepSeek excels at logical challenges and coding assignments. It’s also free and lets users tweak it to perform different tasks. On the other hand, ChatGPT is more versatile and good at creating stories.

To me, ChatGPT feels more familiar and developed at the moment. I’m excited to explore DeepSeek further and see how it evolves.

What kind of tasks do you see yourself using DeepSeek for in the future? I’m curious to hear your thoughts.
