In just one year, AIO has already disrupted how content is surfaced and what ranking strategies work best in 2026 and beyond.
Staying on track with the latest SEO developments is both my job and passion. I’ve gathered all the key information you need to know about AI Overviews SEO in one post.
Keep reading to learn how AI answers appear, what triggers them, and what it takes to earn visibility in this new part of the search experience.
What Are AI Overviews in Google Search?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries showing up at the top of Google Search. They give you a quick, bite-sized answer to complicated questions by pulling information from multiple websites. These overviews make it easier to get the gist of a topic fast and include links to sources if you want to learn more.
To give you an example, here’s how Google would answer this question now:

The goal: make search more helpful, especially for complex, exploratory, or multi-step queries.
These summaries are powered by Google’s Gemini language model as part of the company’s broader shift toward AI-first experiences. It’s a strategic move to compete with other generative AI advancements, namely OpenAI’s ChatGPT and PerplexityAI.
What started as the experimental Search Generative Experience (SGE) feature was officially rebranded and began rolling out to US users in May 2024.
By October 2024, Google expanded the feature to over 100 countries with support for multiple languages. In March 2025, they began testing an “AI Mode” where all content is AI-generated. The company is also considering adding advertisements to this feature in the future.
Where and how AI Overviews appear in search?
AI Overviews typically show up at the top of the search engine results page (SERP), just below paid ads and above regular organic results.
Check out this example:

No need to browse through several travel itineraries to plan my next trip—Google directly answers my query.
These summaries are similar to the featured snippets most of us are already familiar with. The results start in a collapsed format that users can click to expand and view in more detail:

Unlike featured snippets, however, an AI result can include multiple format types in one answer, such as:
- Bulleted lists
- Brief paragraphs
- Product carousels
- Image and video modules
Let’s take the query “how to clean a dishwasher,” for instance.
In this AI overview SEO example, we can see how structure helps the bot surface information. The result for this question provides detailed instructions in a numbered list:

This section is followed by a set of tips organized as bullet points, and lastly, a video guide:

You’ll also notice a small icon at the end of most sentences and paragraphs. These are citation buttons that attribute information to sources and serve as pathways to deeper information.
You can also expand the full list of link cards by clicking on the “Show all” button on the right-hand side.

What types of queries trigger AI overviews?
According to a study by Ahrefs, informational keywords trigger 99.2% of AIO results. These are searches where users are looking to understand, learn, or evaluate something.
Here are a few query types with real examples that trigger AIO:
- Question-based searches (who, what, when, where, why, how)
- Topic exploration queries (“History of the Roman Empire”)
- How-to questions (“How to change a flat tire”)
- Definitional queries (“What is quantum computing?”)
- Comparative searches (“iPhone vs Samsung, which is better?”)
In my experiments with AI Overviews, navigational queries rarely trigger an AI summary. This doesn’t surprise me. Most people googling a specific site are surely trying to navigate to it and don’t need AI to explain it for them.
Impact of AI Overviews on SEO
How do AI overviews affect SEO? Are they a threat to traditional tactics or a new opportunity for more visibility?
“It’s both,” says Sara Cooper, Director of Web Strategy and SEO at Simpro. “If your SEO strategy was built on generic content and keyword stuffing, AI Overviews will definitely eat your lunch.”
I agree with this take, but there’s more nuance to it, so let’s dig into some data.
The new era of “Zero Click” search
How could AI Overviews influence SEO and online visibility for publishers? The biggest risk is being cited but not clicked.
Zero-click searches have increased by 4% since AIO launched. A study by Advanced Web Ranking found a correlation between declining click-through rates (CTR) and the emergence of AIO.
AI-generated summaries now appear in 42.5% of all search results, and their format can shift daily.
Both casual users and SEO professionals have mixed feelings about this. Many believe AIO has negatively impacted the overall search experience. Even Google agrees:

Why is that so?
After all, websites that are prominently cited in AI Overviews can experience maintained or even increased visibility.
Those that are excluded, however, may notice organic traffic declines, even if they rank on the first page. Statistics show that the CTR of pages with informational intent has dropped 7.31% on desktop.
AI Overviews can intercept the click that would have gone to your organic listing, for instance. Let me give you an example with one of my articles.

Currently, my blog post exploring whether Turnitin can detect Quillbot is one of the top-ranking pages on the topic—neat! However, as you can see, related queries trigger an AI response, which doesn’t cite my article among the sources.
Even high-intent keywords like this now include an AI answer, which pushes organic results further down the SERPs.
Arguably, this is a much more user-friendly browsing experience since their questions are answered up front. But it’s bad news for commercial queries where the AIO results can “steal the click” from businesses.
But how big is the impact, currently? Jason Hennessey, CEO at Hennessey Digital, says:
“Some clients lost volume, but not conversions. Their remaining visitors come more qualified, more serious. So while impressions dropped, value per click actually increased. We’ve stopped obsessing over top positions alone. It’s now about intent, not just traffic.”
The bottom line is, AIO won’t hurt your business so long as you provide value to your intended audience.
How AI Overviews Work
Traditional keyword-based searches deliver static results. Your chances of ranking are only as good as your site’s SEO signals and authority.
AI answers, on the other hand, are interactive, dynamic responses. Gemini’s large language model (LLM) works behind the scenes to interpret the context and intent behind what the user searches for.
Allow me to simplify this explanation. The system works in four steps:
- AIO uses natural language processing to understand user queries
- The LLM analyzes and synthesizes information from the most useful authoritative sources
- The system generates a coherent, brief answer that directly addresses the query
- Answers included appropriate citations and links to source material
Google initially used the Pathways Language Model (PaLM) 2 for SGE, which has since improved. The model is trained on massive amounts of information and uses this knowledge to generate summaries.
How is content selected for inclusion in AIO?
The system prioritizes trustworthy sources to guarantee that the generated answer is accurate. Simply put, content selection appears to prioritize several factors:
- Relevance to the user query
- Website authority and trustworthiness
- Clarity and comprehensiveness of information
- Structured content that directly addresses user questions
- Pages that align with Google’s E-E-A-T guidelines (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness)
These are ranking factors every SEO expert is familiar with. But AIO has its intricacies, which I’ll discuss below.
How to Optimize for Google AI Overviews
There’s no guaranteed formula for how to show up in AI Overviews. However, you can increase your chances with some timeless tactics.
Before I give you my tips, I have to emphasize that AI advancement is moving at an unprecedented rate. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is a new discipline, and many factors are in motion, including the ranking strategies that currently work.
With that out of the way, here’s what I know about AI Overviews SEO:
Content best practices
- The number one AIO ranking factor is creating high-quality content that addresses search intent. Understand and match the user’s query type. Study top-ranking results for similar queries to replicate successful formats.
- AI-generated search results favor content that goes deep, not broad. Surface-level articles will not suffice. As Jess Page, Head of Growth at Topview, puts it, “We’ve adopted a ‘depth and breadth’ approach: providing quick answers for AI Overviews while maintaining comprehensive, valuable intel that encourages users to dive deeper on our site.” You need to address related subtopics, include FAQs, and provide alternative angles. Be unique, use long-tail keywords, and anticipate secondary questions.
- How do AI overviews impact SEO strategies? That depends on how well your content can be summarized. Focus on concise answers to succeed with Google AI Overviews SEO. Make your posts quotable and readable. This will make it easier for AI to extract information.
- Formatting matters greatly for AI optimization. Organize your posts using concise headings, bullet points, and short paragraphs. Add jump links and clear sub-sections so Google can easily extract and display relevant information.
- Multimedia is an often-overlooked ranking factor. Visuals increase user engagement and can be featured directly in AI answers. A YouTube channel can rank just as well as a blog post in many cases. The featured image of your article is doubly important because it will show up next to your link if cited.

- Quality and accuracy are fundamental. Fact-check all claims, cite your sources where appropriate, and avoid vague or unsubstantiated information. This is especially important for YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) topics.
Technical SEO considerations
What’s the difference between GEO vs SEO? I like to think of AIO as an additional layer to traditional SEO—all the foundational rules apply:
- Web pages must be discoverable and indexable by Google. If your posts are no-index, they can’t be included in AI answers. Use the appropriate SEO tools to fix crawl errors, avoid noindex tags, and use canonical links correctly.
- Don’t forget about structured data. Apply schema (e.g., article, FAQ, product) to clarify your content’s context and role. Validate with tools like Google’s Rich Results Test or Schema.org’s validator.
- Optimize on-page elements such as title tags, meta descriptions, URL slugs, and headings to reflect target terms. Use semantic HTML to structure content cleanly.
- Your internal link structure is what helps Google understand content relationships with topical clusters of pages. Use descriptive anchor text to connect your pages the smart way.
- Fast, mobile-friendly pages will always outrank underperforming competitors. Compress images, use responsive design, and prioritize core web vitals (LCP, CLS, FID).
Authority and trust signals
This is the big deal that everyone talks about, but it is difficult to quantify or fake with SEO tricks. It takes time and real work to build authority and trustworthiness—with Google and with your audience.
Regardless, these fundamentals will help improve your AI Overviews SEO rankings:
- Demonstrate EEAT: Your business needs a face (or multiple, depending on your scale). Use author bios, about pages, and editorial standards. Add their credentials and link to their social media profiles to help Google understand that these are real people.
- Focus on earning high-quality backlinks. Your website’s link profile is a foundational ranking factor that needs constant work. More authoritative links boost domain rankings and help Google assess your trustworthiness.
- Monitor and engage in communities like Reddit and Quora, and encourage reviews on third-party sites. AI Overviews often cite off-site content, not just your own.
- Be cited by others. Digital PR link building is a top approach to creating content that others, including AIO, refer to. Guides, data studies, and industry insights can attract natural mentions that signal authority to AI search engines.
- Stay active on your professional social media profiles and maintain NAP (Name, Address, Phone) consistency across platforms.

How to Track AI Overviews
I’ve been researching how to optimize my SEO for Google’s AI Overviews since their release.
As of right now, Google’s tools don’t provide channels to monitor AIO traffic specifically. Search Console reports clicks and impressions but doesn’t distinguish them from traditional results. You won’t be able to see if your site was referenced solely via AI.
However, there are workarounds and alternatives you can use. I’ll show you the two methods I use to track SEO for AI Overviews.
Method 1: Using Google Tag Manager (GTM) and Google Analytics 4 (GA4)
This process requires prior know-how about both tools. I might do a deep dive on this method in the future, but here’s the short version to guide you:
The URLs of AIO links contain a unique #:~:text= pattern indicating the clicked text, as seen below:

You can set up custom JavaScript variables in GTM to detect this pattern. Create two variables to extract the beginning and ending of the highlighted text from these URLs.
Then, create a trigger that fires on page views when this string is detected. Use that to send a GA4 event with the extracted text as parameters.
You’ll have to define custom dimensions in GA4 to capture and report on these values. With this setup, you’ll be able to see which AI snippets are bringing visitors to your site.
Method 2: Using Ahrefs
A much simpler tracking method is to use one of the many AI SEO tools out there. I use Ahrefs, but you can check if this function is available in your tool of choice. Here’s how to do it:
Enter your website in Site Explorer and click on Organic Keywords in the sidebar. On this page, you can use a filter to only see pages where you rank in AI Overviews.

Look for the blue diamond indicating that the SERP feature is present. Your report should look something like this:

This is a simple, code-free solution. Unfortunately, I found that it’s not always 100% accurate. The SERPs move quickly, and the date when Ahrefs checked search engine results for a keyword doesn’t update as fast.
Final Thoughts
AI Overviews SEO is a new and exciting subsection of traditional search optimization. Like it or not, this feature is here to stay for a while, so we might as well learn to work with it.
But how are Google’s AI Overviews going to affect SEO in the future? It’s already reducing clicks to web pages by summarizing them directly. Only time will show the long-term implications of this new paradigm in online browsing.
Start keeping up with the future today. Protect your website’s online visibility.
FAQ
Are AI Overviews accurate?
AI Overviews are not fully reliable. Their accuracy is improving, but they often produce factually incorrect or misleading information. This is caused by the fundamental limitations of LLMs, which generate responses based on statistical patterns rather than verified facts, leading to “hallucinations.” Studies show over 60% of AI summaries can be inaccurate, especially on less common topics. Always verify critical information from primary sources.
Should you aim to be included in AI Overviews?
Yes, AI Overviews and SEO go hand-in-hand. AIO occupies a prominent position and redirects traffic from traditional top-ranking pages. Relying solely on high SERP positions no longer guarantees site visits. Even lower-ranked pages benefit from increased visibility and clicks when included in AIO.
What are the negative impacts of AI Overviews on SEO?
AI Overviews harm SEO by causing more declines in organic CTR. This negative effect is particularly noticeable for non-branded and lower-ranking keywords. They increase zero-click searches, reduce traffic, and hurt websites that rely on informational content to rank.
