In this post, I want to evaluate two of the more popular options out there, based on my experience. Letâs compare Surfer SEO vs Semrush and put them to the test to see which tool deserves your attention.
Tool Overview: What Surfer SEO and Semrush Offer
At a glance, both Semrush and Surfer SEO serve a similar purpose. But thereâs a fundamental distinction between them: their scope and specialization.

This is my overall ranking. Despite some overlapping features, they have their differences.
Now, letâs jump into the details.
What is Surfer SEO and who is it for?

Surfer SEO is a cloud-based on-page optimization tool. It can analyze web pages against more than 500 on-page signalsâquite impressive.
Surfer was initially developed as an in-house solution. Since then, it has evolved into a respected platform trusted by users from across the globe.
Is it better than Semrush and who should use it? I believe you can benefit from Surfer SEO if:
- You want to create and optimize content that ranks higher in search engines.
- Improve online visibility through data-driven content suggestions.
- SEO experts who focus more on content optimization rather than technical audits.
For a more in-depth look into what this platform has to offer, you can check out my full Surfer SEO review.
In my opinion, Surferâs Content Editor is the platform’s standout feature. It is particularly valuable for small businesses, such as mine, or freelancers who need an optimization tool without the complexity of other SEO suites.
Is Surfer SEO free? No, but itâs worth the cost. Keep reading to find out why.
What is Semrush and who should use it?

Semrush operates as an all-in-one digital marketing platform now powered by artificial intelligence (AI) functionality. It maintains a massive database of 26+ billion keywords used by individuals and major corporations globally.
This comprehensive tool helps users:
- Promote online presence across multiple channels
- Gain insights into current marketing trends
- Climb search engine results pages (SERPs) through various strategies
Semrush excels at providing actionable data for setting goals and monitoring progress while tracking competitors’ strategies. Its extensive toolkit covers everything from keyword research to backlink analysis, site audits, and even social media management.
The platform is ideally suited for businesses requiring broader digital marketing capabilities, agencies managing multiple clients, and enterprise-level organizations needing in-depth competitor analysis.
Semrush vs Surfer SEO: Feature Comparison
Most people compare these two tools based on which one is better for SEO. Spoiler: I use both, but you might not have the budget or need to invest in each one.
Let me help you save hundreds of dollars annually by giving you a quick overview of the main features of Surfer SEO vs Semrush.
Keyword research: Topic Clusters vs Keyword Magic Tool
What is SEO without keyword research? Everyone working with web content needs to understand how to analyze key terms. Of course, we need a good tool for that.
Letâs start with a Surfer SEO tool review. They approach keyword analysis through topic clustering. I find this is a highly intuitive and user-friendly method that can help people build topical authority in their niche.
Its keyword research tool identifies semantically related terms based on SERP analysis of top-ranking pages. Take a look:

What I like about this feature is that it goes beyond presenting a simple keyword list. Surfer automatically groups related pages into connected clusters, which makes planning content hubs straightforward.
Probably the best feature of Surferâs topic explorer is that it gives you ideas for your next post based on your existing catalog. Brainstorming for new articles has never been easier.
Who is this for?
- Niche bloggers and freelancers
- Small website owners
- SEO writers targeting mostly low-hanging fruit (LHF) keywords

The Semrush keyword magic tool gives tons of data on the top terms youâre ranking for. The sheer volume of their database is tremendousâit accesses over 26 billion terms.
This tool reveals search volume, keyword difficulty, CPC, competition level, and even SERP features for each potential target. Users can also see related terms, phrase matches, and valuable long-tail variations that might otherwise remain undiscovered.
Who can benefit most from the Semrush keyword checker?
- Digital agencies and SEO teams
- Medium to large businesses and enterprises
- Marketing and outreach specialists
đ Winner: Semrush
Although I believe both platforms work well for keyword research, Iâm giving this win to Semrush. Itâs simply a much more scalable solution with a larger database. If you want to know more about its capabilities, you can check out my detailed Semrush review.
Content optimization: Surfer content editor vs Semrush writing assistant
As I mentioned, content optimization is Surfer SEOâs bread and butter. Their Content Editor is a flagship feature capable of providing optimization feedback in real time. It gives you a content score based on keyword optimization, entity usage, topic coverage, link equity, and overall relevance.

I find this tool especially useful if I want to enrich my drafts with keywords based on top-performing competitors. I can also use Surfer to check for plagiarism and generate article outlines.
If youâre into AI writing tools, Surferâs Content Editor comes with âSurfy,â a built-in AI assistant. You can write, rephrase, and refine your text in your own voice.
You can optimize in any language, insert internal links automatically, and even run text through humanizer to improve natural flow.
Take this mini Surfer SEO case study by Paul DeMott, Chief Technology Officer of Helium SEO:
âSurfer SEO shines when we’re polishing content and trying to hit that top 3 spot. We’ve had situations where a page was stuck around position 8 or 9 for weeks. Feeding it into Surfer gave us those granular on-page cues like missing partial match keywords or gaps in header structure that helped nudge those rankings higher. It’s not the tool I start with, but it’s often the one I end with before hitting publish.â
Overall, I agree. Surfer is one of the best tools when it comes to on-page optimization.
Now letâs look at what Semrush has to offer. It has two content-focused tools: the SEO writing assistant and SEO content template.

The writing assistant is the closest equivalent to Surferâs content editor, albeit itâs less useful, in my opinion. This tool is meant to improve readability and tone consistency. Itâs modeled after OpenAI, supports 28 languages, and helps with overall SEO optimization.
I find this interface a bit more cluttered and not as intuitive as Surferâs content tool. The scoring system is not as straightforward, and thereâs definitely a steeper learning curve.
The other feature I mentioned is Semrush’s SEO content template. It analyzes the top ten pages ranking for a target keyword and provides tons of feedback based on that data.
You can get specific recommendations for semantically related terms, ideal word count, Flesch-Kincaid readability score, H1 and meta tag usage, and backlink opportunities. All recommendations are compiled on a single page and can be exported to Google Docs.
đ Winner: Surfer SEO
Indeed, Semrush’s content tools are feature-rich, but I prefer the depth of Surfer’s real-time recommendations.
SEO Audits: Surfer content audit vs Semrush site audit
Surfer’s content audit tool is simplistic, but it does the job well enough.
It analyzes your siteâs existing pages using Google Search Console data to surface improvement opportunities. It covers all the basics: use it to track rankings, CTR, traffic, and content quality.
A Surfer SEO audit will also suggest quick wins, highlight what to fix, and let you auto-optimize and update everything with one click.

Remarkably, it completes website audits in less than a minute through an automated process requiring minimal technical expertise. This makes it the perfect auditing tool for beginners.
You can set up email reports to stay updated on ranking changes and new optimization chances.

Correspondingly, Semrush’s site audit tool checks for over 140 technical SEO issues. If you are an expert in the field and want to go in-depth with audits, this is your go-to.
It evaluates crawlability, detects sitemap issues, analyzes site architecture, internal linking, and so much more. Very few other SEO tools go this deep. Not only does it fix problems, but it also generates detailed reports with actionable insights.
Uniquely, it can also check multilingual websites for the correct implementation of “hreflang” tags. Iâve worked with several clients who had different language versions of their sites, and trust me, itâs good to have a tool that can check for this issue.
đ Winner: Semrush
Semrushâs site audit is easily the superior choice in this category. The sheer volume of technical issues that can be addressed with this tool is unmatched.
Competitor Analysis: SERP Analyzer vs Domain Overview

Surferâs SERP Analyzer is a precision tool built for granular, on-page SEO analysis. It dissects the top-ranking pages for any given term, uncovering correlations between ranking factors like word count, keyword usage, content structure, and more.
The tool also allows you to add your own (or any) URL to see how it stacks up. Using SERP Analyzer, you can find what your competitors are doing right so that you can reverse-engineer that success.

On the other hand, Semrush has Domain Overview, a broad-spectrum SEO intelligence dashboard. It gives you a top-down view of a website’s overall online performance. Is it better than Surfer in this regard? According to Ara Zhang, Head of Marketing at LeadsNavi, it is:
âPersonally, I lean towards Semrush for a comprehensive SEO workflow that integrates keyword tracking, competitor analysis, and rank tracking. The wealth of data it offers about search engine results pages is unmatched. It’s particularly helpful when working on large-scale projects where a deeper dive into competitor strategies and backlink analysis is required.â
Domain Overview compiles multiple data streams: organic and paid traffic, top-performing keywords, backlink profile strength, and competitor benchmarks. Itâs designed for big-picture analysis.
The Semrush rank factor grades a domain’s online presence based on data from Semrush’s databases since 2012.
I find it great for prospecting and understanding SEO performance at scale, but not for on-page content refinement.
đ Winner: Tied
Both tools are great at what they do. Semrushâs Domain Overview is strong for overall strategy development, while Surferâs depth is unmatched on a per-keyword, per-page level.
Now, letâs compare Surfer SEO vs Semrush in terms of backlink analysis.
Link building tools: basic vs advanced link insights
Backlinks are a category where the two tools start to deviate a lot.
Surfer SEO doesn’t have a dedicated link analysis tool. You canât explore individual backlink sources or track gains and losses over time. Thereâs no actionable outreach function and no way to benchmark your siteâs backlink profile beyond very basic comparisons using a custom URL input.

In contrast, Semrush has it all. The Backlink Gap tool allows you to compare your websiteâs links against up to five competitors simultaneously. It identifies specific domains linking to your competitors but not to you. I find this to be tremendously helpful for finding tangible link-building opportunities.
There are tons of ways to filter and sort referring domains and use that data to customize your outreach. But thatâs not all. Semrush also has a dedicated link building tool, which lets you track prospects and launch outreach campaigns right within the platform. Plus, with Semrush Copilot, you even get AI-powered suggestions tailored to your domainâs backlink gaps.
đ Winner: Semrush
No contest in this category. If link building is central to your SEO strategy, Semrush is the clear winner.
Ease of use and customer support
The interface difference between these platforms is immediately apparent.

Surfer SEO offers a cleaner, more focused dashboard that prioritizes content-related tasks. Navigation feels intuitive, especially for users primarily concerned with content improvement.

Semrush, alternatively, presents a feature-rich interface that can appear cluttered due to its comprehensive toolset. This complexity stems from housing numerous SEO functions under one roof. Semrush has a tool for everything, which is great, as long as you can find it among the countless options and menus on-screen.
In terms of customer service, I havenât had trouble with either. Based on user reviews, Surfer SEO staff appears to be more responsive and reliable compared to Semrush. If thatâs a concern for you, research what other users are saying before committing to either tool.
đ Winner: Surfer SEO
As much as I like data-rich reports, Semrushâs interface can feel cluttered and confusing. It requires more time to master, whereas Surferâs dashboard is sleek and easy to navigate.
Additional tools and integrations
Both tools offer valuable integrations that enhance workflow efficiency.
Surfer SEO integrates tightly with tools that content marketing teams and SEO writers use daily.

Its Chrome Extensions bring Surfer’s optimization guidance directly into Google Docs, ChatGPT, and Jasper.
With the WordPress and Contentful integrations, users can publish directly from Surferâs Content Editor into these CMS platforms.
Zapier and API support open the door to auto-creating new edits from external triggers or generating and publishing AI content at scale. Surfer’s integrations are built to reduce friction and support high-volume content creation.

Semrush, on the other hand, integrates with a much broader set of platforms.
Its native integrations with Google Analytics, Search Console, Google Ads, and Looker Studio allow for detailed campaign analysis, automated reporting, and PPC workflow.
Semrush also connects with Gmail for direct backlink outreach. You can also link it up with Zoho, Trello, monday.com, and Wix for extended task management.
Like using AI content tools? Youâre in luck because Semrush ContentShake AI, Scalenut, and Renderforest are also part of the platformâs app ecosystem.
They have a ton of free tools as well. The Semrush paraphrasing tool, in particular, is great for rewriting text to make it sound unique.
đ Winner: Semrush
Even though Surfer is excellent for simplifying the content writing experience, Semrush is a multipurpose solution with more options.
Plans and Pricing: Which Tool Saves You More?
Many people probably scrolled to this part of the article. How much does it cost to use Surfer SEO vs Semrush? This is one of the most significant differences between these competing platforms.
Let’s examine their pricing structures to determine which offers better value for your specific needs.
Surfer SEO pricing plans: Essential, Scale, Enterprise
How much is Surfer SEO? Itâs definitely more cost-effective than other platforms, but still not the cheapest.
Letâs compare the Surfer SEO price plans. Their tiered structure scales with content production needs, as follows:
- Essential Plan: $99/month ($79/month billed annually, saving $240/year) includes tracking for 200 pages, 30 monthly article optimizations, and 5 AI-generated articles.
- Scale Plan: $219/month ($175/month billed annually, saving $528/year) expands to 1,000 tracked pages, 100 monthly optimizations, and 20 AI articles.
- Enterprise Plan: Custom pricing with white-labeling, API access, and personalized support.
While a Surfer SEO free trial is no longer an option, you get a 7-day money-back guarantee on all plans. This applies to first-time subscribers only, and annual plans have usage thresholds for refund eligibility.
Semrush pricing plans: Pro, Guru, Business
Before subscribing, check to see if the Semrush monthly pricing plans can fit into your budget. Donât forget, this is an all-in-one SEO toolkit, so be prepared for higher costs. They offer a 7-day free trial of either Pro or Guru plans with full feature access.
- Pro Plan: $139.95/month ($117.33/month annually) with 5 projects and 500 tracked keywords.
- Guru Plan: $249.95/month ($208.33/month annually), allowing 15 projects and 1,500 keywords.
- Business Plan: $499.95/month ($416.66/month annually) supporting 40 projects and 5,000 keywords.
Many of Semrush’s advanced features require additional add-ons. Their app catalog is impressive, but the bottom line isâbe prepared to pay for it.
Which SEO tool offers better ROI?
If weâre strictly comparing monetary value, Surfer SEO costs less. Their Essential plan ($99/month) costs $40.95 less than Semrush’s entry-level Pro plan ($139.95/month). Thatâs $491.40 annual savings.
Keep in mind that these numbers are only likely to go up in the future. Many were disappointed by the Semrush price increase in recent years, which has led some users to reconsider their subscriptions.
Content-focused teams will find greater value with Surfer’s dedicated features. Larger teams managing multiple projects will likely find Semrush’s expansive toolkit worth the premium.
Ultimately, the ROI question depends on your needs.

My Verdict
The choice between Surfer SEO vs Semrush comes down to the use case.
Surfer covers the basics of on-page optimization without the complexity of an all-encompassing platform. Semrush, though more expensive, offers unquestionably more comprehensive capabilities.
At the end, strategy goals and the price difference will define this decision for most users. As a small agency founder, I find value in both for their respective strengths.
