To find out, I analyzed thousands of job postings on Indeed and Glassdoor to provide a breakdown of SEO salaries by experience, job title, and location.

These real-world benchmarks can help you if you’re just starting out, scaling your career, or hiring top talent.

Let’s jump into it.

How Much Do SEOs Earn?

If you’re in SEO (or thinking about it), let me tell you—there’s serious money on the table.

I calculated the average salaries from six major SEO job types to find the overall industry average. The typical yearly pay for people working in SEO jobs in the US is around $74,795. This is higher than the average household income in the country ($66,622).

Exactly how much you can earn is entirely subjective and depends on your experience, location, and company size. You usually find higher-paying jobs on the West and East coasts and in large tech hubs.

Now, let me give you an in-depth look at recent earnings data on the most prominent SEO job positions.

SEO Specialist

seo specialist

SEO specialists, often referred to as analysts, turn complex data into actionable strategies. Most SEO jobs on the market fit within this job category.

These are the experts tasked with improving search strategies beyond mere implementation. Their role demands skills in data mining with SEO tools, performance reporting, backlink exchange, technical audits, and more.

I looked at reports from 871 salaries on job-seeking platforms. I found that experts in this role can expect to earn an average annual salary of $61,746. Figures can start as low as $33,507 for junior positions and go all the way up to $113,785 for the veterans in the field.

I cross-referenced these figures with Glassdoor data, which analyzed 3,114 submitted salaries totaling an industry average of about $71,000. What I also found is that other than base earnings, many jobs offered additional pay.

These performance-based incentives (usually bonuses, profit sharing, and commissions) ranged from $4,000–$8,000 per year, averaging $5,552 annually.

Other than the level of experience, location is the primary factor impacting paychecks. These are the top cities for SEO experts in the US:

CityAverage Salary
Seattle, WA$119,320
New York, NY$91,639
Cincinnati, OH$66,323
Waltham, MA$66,196
Boise, ID$63,747
Spokane, WA$62,983
Naperville, IL$62,188
Houston, TX$54,737
Grand Rapids, MI$50,779

Seattle and New York City take the lead, which shouldn’t come as a surprise. Both Washington and the state of New York ranked in the top 10 places in the US with the most SEO experts.

The Washington state capital, in particular, is home to over 13,000 tech firms. With a median wage of $157,200 in the local tech industry, SEO specialists are well-paid for their work in Seattle.

SEO Manager

seo manager

If you’re an SEO manager, you’re in one of the most lucrative positions in the search marketing field. An SEO manager is in charge of handling projects and working with digital teams and clients. Their primary goal is to develop growth strategies that increase online visibility.

But just how much can you expect to earn on the job?

According to the latest data I found, SEO managers in the US take home an average of $81,915 per year.

After analyzing 374 reported salaries as of February 2025, I found that SEO managers in the US are earning:

  • $49,044 annually for entry-level roles or working in smaller companies.
  • An average of $81,915 per year, which is the most common salary range.
  • Up to $136,818 per year for top-tier positions or jobs in high-cost cities.

As mentioned, not all cities pay the same due to local demand and cost of living. Here are the top-paying cities for SEO managers:

CityAverage Salary
San Francisco, CA$112,825
New York, NY$104,336
Philadelphia, PA$84,878
Austin, TX$80,436
Atlanta, GA$79,245
Denver, CO$77,865
Los Angeles, CA$77,254
San Diego, CA$76,850
Chicago, IL$73,323

San Francisco takes the crown, with New York following as a close second. SEO managers in these cities can expect to earn well into the six-figure range. Salaries for tech jobs in Silicon Valley average around $141,618 annually, making it one of the most lucrative areas to work in.

SEO Content Strategist

An SEO content strategist bridges the gap between technical skills and marketing. Unlike analysts, who focus on data, content strategists specialize in planning keyword-driven storytelling.

Any brand interested in increasing its online positioning should prioritize content-driven SEO strategies. That’s why this is an in-demand profession with a median income of $80,582 per year. Reported earnings range from $58,180 at entry-level to $111,609 for top professionals.

The role pays well, especially in media-heavy places like New York City. Other cities like Denver and St. Louis are catching up as more businesses invest in content marketing SEO.

These are the top-paying locations for content strategists in the US:

CityAverage Salary
New York, NY$100,598
Denver, CO$83,111
St. Louis, MO$82,742
Des Moines, IA$78,483
Nashville, TN$75,243
San Diego, CA$75,055
Seattle, WA$72,566
Tampa, FL$61,286
Las Vegas, NV$37,678

If you’ve got a mix of writing skills, technical knowledge, and strategic thinking, this role offers great career prospects.

SEO Executive Salaries

Executives are responsible for overseeing the entire SEO strategy in their organizations. It’s their job to align strategies with business goals, manage budgets, and coordinate with other departments.

Unlike analysts or strategists, who focus on specific tasks, an executive is in charge of the overall direction of SEO efforts across the organization.

Naturally, businesses invest in strong leadership in this area. I found that in 2025, the average salary for an SEO executive in the United States is $116,502. Note that this figure is based on only 6 reports at the time of research, so the sample is limited.

Compensation can range from $56,618 for junior executives to $239,725 for senior professionals working at major establishments.

Location data for this position was inconclusive, as this is a less common role. However, SEO execs can earn good salaries even in smaller communities.

Job postings in Mohall, North Dakota, offer an average annual salary of $161,595—way above the state average, which is $59,050 per year.

Meanwhile, in major cities, such as Washington, DC, you can expect to earn about $124,557 on average for high-level SEO expertise.

SEO Team Leader

SEO team leaders are tasked with overseeing teams, similarly to managers. However, they don’t operate at an executive level.

These experts are in charge of coordinating tasks and supervising staff members. This position is often a stepping stone toward senior management positions.

Here are the average salaries you can expect to earn as an SEO team lead in the US:

  • Entry-level: $38,220 per year
  • Mid-level (average salary): $41,630 per year
  • Senior SEO team leaders: $45,343 per year

Despite the demanding responsibilities, I found that the earnings in this role are quite humble. However, salaries fluctuate significantly depending on location and industry.

If you’re looking for top-dollar opportunities, consider these three cities that offer above-average annual salaries:

  • Phoenix, AZ: $75,251
  • Orlando, FL: $69,162
  • Bristol, PA: $61,467

As you can see, locations with major corporate headquarters or large marketing firms are more likely to pay well.

Copywriting Salaries

What is at the core of SEO if not copywriting?

Anything from blog posts and advertisements to newsletters and social media requires a well-written copy.

This important role is essential in marketing, branding, and SEO. Despite artificial intelligence (AI) disrupting the industry, content creators and freelance writers are still in high demand.

Data from 776 reported salaries as of February this year shows that the average salary for a copywriter in the US is $66,395 per year. Junior employees can expect to earn anywhere between $42,078 and $54,336. Senior professionals in competitive markets can earn from $93,433 up to $104,764 or more, depending on their skills.

On par with other jobs, copywriters in major metropolitan areas often earn higher salaries. These are the highest-paying cities in the US for SEO content writers:

CityAverage Salary
Los Angeles, CA$81,431
New York, NY$79,572
Birmingham, MI$79,407
San Antonio, TX$77,857
Austin, TX$71,920
Southfield, MI$63,952
Scottsdale, AZ$61,269
Appleton, WI$51,204
Baton Rouge, LA$50,644

The future of copywriting in the age of AI

I think it’s essential to note that the rapid advancement of AI-driven content generation tools is reshaping the role of copywriters.

AI tools can bulk-generate articles on any topic within seconds. Despite the questionable quality of AI-written content, businesses see it as a cheap and efficient solution.

Many companies already use AI writing tools to assist with ideation, keyword research, and even full-scale content production.

I firmly believe that while AI can produce SEO-optimized copy, it lacks original expertise and emotional intelligence—qualities that make human writers invaluable.

That said, job displacement is a real concern. The Future of Jobs Report by the World Economic Forum (WEF) finds that 41% of companies intend to reduce their workforce due to the rise of AI.

Copywriters were among the first to have felt the pressure to quickly “upskill” to remain relevant.

The best way for writers to adapt is by focusing on brand voice, audience psychology, and creative storytelling—areas where AI still falls short.

Conclusion

So, is working in SEO a profitable career path in 2025?

Absolutely. Hopefully, now you have more clarity on what compensation you can expect to earn in the SEO field (or how you fare in your current position).

Salaries are climbing and industry demand is strong. But it’s a tough business that changes fast. Only one thing remains constant—the best-paid professionals will be those who adapt and innovate quickly. Are you one of them?
